Ferrari Chairman to start 2009 Le Mans 60 years after first Ferrari win [w/VIDEO]

This Saturday in France, Ferrari Chairman Luca di Montezemolo will be on hand to give the drivers the starting order for the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Montezemolo's presence will help commemorate the 60th anniversary of the first win by a Ferrari at the French endurance classic. In 1949 Luigi Chinetti and Lord Selsdon drove a 166 MM Barchetta to overall victory. Since then Ferrari entries have taken the overall checkered flag eight other times along with numerous class wins, including last year when Risi Competizione won GT2 in an F430. Ten of those F430s will be running this weekend.

Luca di Montezemolo discusses Ferrari at Le Mans
That original 166 MM is currently on display at the museum in the Galleria Ferrari in Maranello. If you happen to be in Northern Italy, it's surely worth dropping by to check out the museum. There is a video of Montezemolo discussing Ferrari's Le Mans heritage after the jump.

PRESS RELEASE:

The 166 MM, the first Ferrari winning at Le Mans in the year 1949, at Maranello's Galleria Ferrari.

The words of Chairman Montezemolo, who, on 13th June, will start the legendary race, 60 years after the first win of the Prancing Horse.

Maranello, June 6th 2009 – The 77th edition of the Le Mans 24 Hour Race is to have a high profile guest starter. At 15.00 on June 13th next, in fact, Ferrari Chairman Luca di Montezemolo will give the official start signal for the most prestigious endurance race in the motor racing world.

Mr Montezemolo was invited to Le Mans by Automobile Club de l'Ouest President Jean-Claude Plassart to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the first of Maranello's nine overall 24 Hour Race victories, which came courtesy of the 166 MM of Luigi Chinetti and Lord Selsdon in 1949.

"I am delighted to be given the opportunity to start a race that has made motor racing history and has such strong links with Ferrari. Our Scuderia has delivered some unforgettable achievements on this circuit," declared Montezemolo. "The Le Mans 24 Hour Race is synonymous with technologically-advanced sporting competition and has always been a focus of great attention on our part."

In addition to the nine overall wins clocked up between 1949 and 1965 (the latter thanks to Jochen Rindt and Masten Gregory in the 250 LM), Ferrari has also taken numerous class victories in the French race, the most recent of which was delivered in 2008 by the F430 GT of the Risi Competizione team. A total of 10 Maranello berlinettas will be lined out at the start by eight private teams on June 13th this year.

Also on hand at the circuit will be the GES Director Stefano Domenicali, a further demonstration of Maranello's continuing interest in this classic race. In his role as Chairman of the FIAT Group, Montezemolo will also be marking another special anniversary at Le Mans as it was 40 years ago, in September 1968, that the late Gianni Agnelli also started the Le Mans 24 Hour Race.

Ferrari F430 carbon wheel package by Miami’s 360 Forged

The number of high-end performance tuning coming out of Florida appears to have no bound, with Miami’s 360 Forged being the latest to join a growing list that includes the likes Renntech and Mosler Automotive just to name a few. Unlike some of the more established firms, 360 Forged is focused on the design and manufacture of low-volume wheel packages.
360 Forged Straight 5ive Carbon Ferrari F430 12 of 14

Its latest kit is the Straight 5ive Carbon 20in wheels designed for the Ferrari F430 supercar. The wheels measure 8.5in across up front and up to 13in across in the rear and have had been in development for almost two years.
The wheel design features a forged aluminum outer shell with titanium reverse fasteners and a carbon-fiber cross section. Other dimensions are available, including 19 and 22in sizes. The particular unit designed for the F430 includes a gloss black lip with a Ferrari red stripe.

Other modifications to the car include the addition of a Gruppe M carbon-fiber intake system, a RennSport One and EvoMS ECU tune, a Novitec high-flow exhaust system with the catalytic converter removed, a Hamann lower lip and new H&R coilover springs.

New Bike Ferrari motorcycle coming up for sale, asking price US$300,000

For those who’ve always wanted a Ferrari motorcycle, here’s your chance to get one. Not some crappy backyard bodge job or a vague concept – this is the real thing. It’s the one-off Ferrari motorcycle built by David Kay Engineering and bears frame and engine number SF-O1M. It’s the only real Ferrari motorcycle in the world.

Back in 1990, David Kay wrote to Piero Ferrari (Enzo Ferrari’s son), asking him if he could build a motorcycle that would carry the prancing horse badge, in tribute to the late Enzo. Piero did approve the project and gave David the permission to put a Ferrari badge on his motorcycle.

The bike, which took 3,000 man-hours to build, was completed in 1995. Its 900cc, four-cylinder, DOHC engine is custom-built, and produces 105 horsepower at 8,800rpm – enough to propel the 172-kilo bike to a top speed of 265km/h.

Other bits on this 1995 Ferrari 900 include a tubular steel chassis, aluminium bodywork, custom-built exhaust system, digital instrument panel, Forcelle Italia USD fork, Brembo disc brakes, 17-inch Astralite wheels and twin WPS shock absorbers at the back.

A real, 'official' Ferrari motorcycle, for a mere US$300,000. A bargain, eh?

The bike, which has spent most of its life in its owner’s drawing room, is in perfect, mint condition. Bonhams will be auctioning the machine on the 20th of this month, and asking price would be around US$300,000. Now if all your mates are lining up to buy a Ducati Streetfighter S or the MV Agusta Brutale 1078RR, and you want to be one up on them…
